Perhaps by now you’ve heard of Tailwind. Tailwind is a Pinterest partner and their main goal is to help you grow your Pinterest account. They have a ton of statistical information that you can use to see what works in your Pinterest account and what does not and they help you publish pins at peak pinning times. The biggest draw of Tailwind, though, is their scheduling tool. All of these aspects are so important when getting started with Tailwind. While it may seem like just one more thing to manage, it will make your life easier in the long run!
One of the biggest hurdles is simply getting started with Tailwind. It can seem a bit overwhelming at first, especially for a new user. This tutorial is here to help you jump that hurdle so you can start winning at the Pinterest game! Never fear, this is a basic introduction, nothing too technical and there are plenty of images to help along the way.
Getting Started with Tailwind
First Things First
You will need an account. You can head over to the Tailwind site and get started. The process for signing up is really simple and straightforward. No surprises in store for you during this portion! Simply click on the big red button and fill out the required information. After linking your Pinterest account and giving Tailwind your preferred email you will be directed to your Schedule in the dashboard.
Follow the Leader
Once you are in your dashboard area you will see on the right hand side that the site is programmed to help you get set up! There are a few steps to complete and you can follow the program to get your account set up properly. Don’t miss out on a few key areas; adding recommended times to your account is important, so is how many times per day you are going to pin. Do not skip these steps!
Tailwind recommends that you pin no more than 50 times each day. Pinterest doesn’t have a “more is better” policy with regards to pins–and Tailwind has done studies about the benefits of pinning with regards to followers and repins, and has determined that after 50 pins a day, there is no benefit to your account.
Tailwind is equipped with a “smart schedule” that places the optimized times into your schedule. Tailwind will analyze when your followers are most active and use that data to determine when it is a good time for your pins to be published. These time slots will be automatically added to your schedule when you click on them (they’re outlined in green), you can add more recommended time slots by refreshing your page. By clicking on “Add Time slot” under each day of the week on the left side of the screen, you can add custom time slots–be aware that these are not recommended time slots, though. The time slots represent pins that you will then fill with content to be “repinned” to your Pinterest account.
Finally, in this step you need to find your timezone from the drop-down menu and select it! All the check-marks should be lit up green on the right side. This indicates that you’ve done all the recommended steps for set up. Woohoo, check that off your list of things to do.
Next on the List
The next thing I would recommend you do is download the extension for your browser. This gives you the ability to open Pinterest and select some content to schedule through Tailwind. Click on the bullhorn button on the left side of the screen and then click on “scheduled pins.” This will take you to the next step of setting up your account.
You’ll see on this screen that there is a tutorial for how to schedule your first pin. This is very useful info and allows you to play with the system without publishing anything. Take advantage of that feature and use it to learn how to set up a pin for publish. Once you’ve walked through setting up a pin you can see the buttons available for gathering content. You can upload pins directly to publish OR you can download the extension for your browser and use it to gather pins directly from Pinterest!
Schedule Some Content
Once you’ve completed the trial step you are ready to get some content to schedule. Head on over to Pinterest and use the Tailwind logo that pops up on the pins when you hover. This allows you to schedule the content to publish through Tailwind. After you find a pin you want to save, it’s simple: you click the logo, and follow the prompts on the screen. You will have to select a board to pin to, a description, and then you can either add it to your queue (schedule for publish) or you can save to drafts (add to schedule later). If you decide to save your pins to drafts you can access them in your Tailwind screen; you can navigate to different locations of your Tailwind account by hovering over the icons on the left hand side of the screen.
Shuffle the Deck
A great feature in Tailwind is the ability to shuffle your queue. This might not seem like an important feature at first glance but if you’ve ever had to scroll through ten pages of crock pot recipes on your feed you might change your mind! Simply click on any scheduled pin and drag it to a new time slot. If that time slot is filled, Tailwind will automatically bump that pin to a new time slot. Another easy way to shuffle the queue is with the “Shuffle the Queue” button in the scheduled pins dashboard! It’s important to keep your queue from becoming too repetitive. Shuffle your pins to keep content new and engaging. Giving your followers lots of awesome content to choose from will keep them active!
Tailwind suggests time slots for you to publish pins, I know, we already covered this! What we didn’t discuss is that you can also choose to use Tailwind with interval pinning. Interval pinning is exactly what it sounds like: Pinning at designated intervals. Contrary to popular belief it’s NOT a big Pinterest “no, no” to duplicate pins. Especially if these pins are popular and drawing a lot of traffic, it can be a good idea to add them again! The key is to not overdo it or overwhelm your viewers with identical content.
At the bottom of any pin you are about to schedule you can choose a specific time to publish by clicking on the little clock face, or you can click the big green button and add it to your schedule. In either case, once you have made your selection, Tailwind will handle the rest! This automated system allows you to reach viewers at peak moments with content they are interested in, saving you the time and effort of being online 24 hours a day trying to promote your page.
Everyone wants to be a superstar at something, right?!? Tailwind is a great platform to help you become a Pinterest superstar. Not only will it make your life so much easier, it will help you learn what works and what does not. After about a week of using Tailwind you will see your stats start filtering in on the Dashboard page. These stats will help show you how you are doing, they will keep you updated so you know how to adjust your content or publishing times! The more you use the platform the more Tailwind will learn. You can always go back into your schedule to add more suggested time slots!
